Message templates and placeholders

Write messages once with {{placeholders}} for what changes per person, and use them in emails, WhatsApp, automations and with Duke.

On this page

Message templates are the messages you send again and again (reminders, welcomes, offers), written once. Words in double braces, like {{first_name}}, are filled in for each person.

Message templates for email and WhatsApp
Pulse Fitness Studio demo: message templates

Create a template

  1. Go to Settings and choose Message templates.
  2. Click New template.
  3. Choose how it's Sent by: Email or WhatsApp. You can't change this later.
  4. Give it a Name (only your team sees it; Duke finds templates by name).
  5. For email, write the Subject. Then write the Message, using the Insert buttons to add placeholders.
  6. Choose the Kind of message: Update or reminder or Offer or promotion (offers cost more to send on WhatsApp).
  7. Click Create template.

The Preview shows what an example person would receive, with the filled-in parts highlighted.

Placeholders

These are filled in automatically:

PlaceholderFilled with
{{first_name}}The customer's first name
{{last_name}}The customer's last name
{{full_name}}The customer's full name
{{business_name}}Your business's name
{{sender_name}}The name of the person sending it

You can add your own, such as {{plan}} or {{ends_on}}. They're filled in when the message is sent: an automation passes the membership's plan, for example, or you type the value. Placeholder names use lowercase letters, numbers and underscores.

WhatsApp templates

WhatsApp templates must be approved by WhatsApp before they can start a chat. Open the template and click Send to WhatsApp for approval. See WhatsApp.

Change or delete a template

Open it, change what you need and click Save template. Delete this template removes it; messages already sent are kept.
