AI credits, usage and your own AI key

How AI credits work, where to see usage, what happens when they run out, and how to use your own OpenAI or Anthropic key.

On this page

Duke runs on AI models. Your plan includes a monthly allowance of AI credits for them.

How credits work

  • One credit is worth $0.01 of AI cost (100 credits = $1). One short question to Duke is about 1 credit; a long one 5 to 10.
  • Credits renew every month, in your business's time zone.
  • Calls on your own AI key don't use credits.

The AI credits box at the bottom of the menu shows how many you've used of your limit and when they reset. Click it to open Settings → AI.

See your usage

Go to Settings → AI. This month shows the credits used, the number of AI calls, and breakdowns By feature (AI agents, insights, goals…) and By person.

When credits run out

Duke tells you: “This month's AI credits are used up. Ask an owner to upgrade the plan, or add your own AI key in Settings → AI.” Duke on duty switches to drafts at its own limit, and insights show plain numbers. See Duke says the AI credits are used up.

Use your own AI key

If you have your own account with OpenAI or Anthropic, Duke can use it. Those calls are billed by your provider and don't use credits.

  1. Go to Settings → AI and find Model and keys.
  2. On the provider's card, paste your API key and click Save key.
  3. Click Test key to check it (this makes one tiny call your provider bills you for).
  4. Leave Use this key ticked.

Your key is stored encrypted and never shown again; only its last four characters appear. Untick Use this key to pause it, or Remove key to delete it.

Under Model, you can keep Recommended (chosen for each feature) or pick one model for everything.

You need permission to manage AI settings (owners have it). In the demo businesses, keys can't be added.
